New technology to help raise pupil achievement in Norfolk school

Back to releases 14/06/2010

Hobart High School, which already achieves ‘exceptionally high results’ for its pupils according to Ofsted, has invested in new software to give teachers the tools that will help them raise achievement even further.

The school will introduce the SIMS management information system from Capita Children’s Services, which will help teachers easily spot when a child is struggling with their work or general school life and help them intervene earlier.

The software will allow the school to track and analyse pupil data and provide information on all aspects of each student’s time at school, including their attendance, behaviour and achievement information.

Sam Griffin, deputy head teacher at Hobart High School, said:  “One of the key reasons for investing in the new software is to enable teachers to look at specific groups and identify where students need help, providing one-to-one tuition where appropriate.

“With the new software, we will have one single source of information about students that can be accessed by all members of staff at any time and from any location.  For example, if the head of English wants to know how all children with English as an additional language are progressing, and whether they need additional support, they can access that information quickly.  We could also look at data for a student that consistently does well to see if they are performing strongly across all subjects or if there is a concern in one subject. This sort of detailed analysis helps us spot issues that may normally go unnoticed earlier so we can step in and help when it is still easy to make a difference.”

The SIMS system will also provide a facility for parents to be able to access achievement information and other details of their child’s school life via the web, enabling them to take a more active role in their child’s education.

Bob Skinner, commercial manager, Hobart High School, said: “The great thing about SIMS is that it can be tailored to our particular plans for our students as Capita have designed the software so that it is flexible enough to meet different schools’ specific needs.”

SIMS, is used by over 21,000 schools across the country. It allows schools to enter details about numerous aspects of a child’s school life and then brings all this information together. Schools can then use it in many ways, including to help improve behaviour or personalise students’ learning.

Phil Neal, managing director of SIMS at Capita Children’s Services, said: “Hobart High realise that the earlier a student receives help, the greater impact it will have, and this is why they have managed to achieve such great results so far. The addition of SIMS software will ensure teachers can access information to spot where issues are, more easily and earlier, so that the relevant support is offered in time.”
