North Yorkshire County Council has announced that Capita Children’s Services has been chosen to supply its schools with the SIMS management information system (MIS). Following the contract win, SIMS will become the MIS that the council recommends for use in its schools.
SIMS carries out a school’s complex pupil information management needs – such as analysing pupil achievement and attendance data – and performs many administrative tasks that a school undertakes.
Dave Houghton, head of schools ICT, North Yorkshire County Council said: “We feel that SIMS will give our schools the best opportunity to use their management information system as an integral tool to support school improvement.
“SIMS can help us with our aim to raise pupil achievement by giving school leaders and teachers the information needed to make the right decisions about pupils’ learning. With better access to targeted information on pupils, we can have an impact on teaching and learning throughout the North Yorkshire area.”
The authority went through a rigorous tender process to ensure that it got the best possible software for its schools. Capita Children’s Services was selected out of the initial 17 companies who put a bid forward.
With a large number of rural schools, many of which have poor access to broadband, the authority has chosen a flexible solution that can support all of its educational establishments. The SIMS system can be hosted centrally by the authority or situated locally for those schools with slower network speeds.
Phil Neal, managing director of SIMS for Capita Children’s Services, said: “North Yorkshire is a substantial authority with a diverse range of needs. They have chosen SIMS because the system is flexible enough to meet all of their requirements. Clearly, the authority is looking to use the information that is available within SIMS to drive the performance of schools forward and we will support them in doing this. We look forward to having a long and fruitful partnership with them.”
